Welcome back to my virtual workshop on handlettering and calligraphy, Lettering 101! I’m so glad you decided to join me, and I only hope I can convey my knowledge in a way that you find both informative and enjoyable!
I hope you enjoyed last week’s drills and found them useful! They’ll be put to good use this week when we cover our first letterforms. This week begins our MINISCULES series! I will show you the lowercase letters A – L in copperplate style. Next week we’ll cover M – Z.
I don’t think I can stress enough that learning the basic forms and principles of letterforms is essential before manipulating them to form your own style. It may seem boring and mundane now, but trust me. One day in the near future you’ll have an AHA! moment as you’re effortlessly creating beautiful modern calligraphy—or even flourishing—and you’ll think back on these first moments of creating letterforms!
RESOURCES
My most used resource when it comes to copperplate is the book Mastering Copperplate Calligraphy by Eleanor Winters. It is a large book so it can look daunting to the beginning calligrapher, but it is well worth it to have everything at your fingertips. My letters aren’t page by page exactly the same, but that’s because I want to show you what worked for me in the easiest way!
Two of my calligraphy heroes are anintran and sarahscript. They both are DYNAMITE when it comes to foundational calligraphy. Check both of them out on Instagram and then check out Sarah’s YouTube channel for some awesome videos to accompany our lessons and worksheets here!
THIS WEEK
Like I mentioned before, my worksheets are made using a Wacom Tablet and a stylus so please just use these as guidelines. I’ll be posting videos and closeup shots of the letters that we’re practicing over the next few days on my Instagram to show you what to expect when using your pointed pen.
Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or want some feedback on your work! A few of you posted using #lettering101 and tagging me last week and I LOVED seeing it!
Alright! Let’s start some MINISCULES!!!
